Christmas and New Year 2017

Major route improvement work affecting Thameslink services over the Christmas and New Year period

Please plan ahead if you are travelling between 23 December 2017 and 1 January 2018 as improvement work as well as the normal service alterations over this period will mean that services on most routes will be amended.

Overview of service alterations

Christmas Eve

Services will shut down early from approximately 20:00 on Sunday 24 December. Please check your last trains carefully before you travel.

Christmas and Boxing Day

No train service on Gatwick Express, Southern or Thameslink on Monday 25 or Tuesday 26 December. On 26 December, a limited bus service will operate on the following routes:

  • Between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport (non-stop) every 30 minutes between 05:00 and 23:00
  • Between London Victoria to East Croydon calling at all stations via Selhurst every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 22:00
  • Between Gatwick Airport and Brighton calling at Haywards Heath only every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 22:00
  • Southern and Thameslink tickets will also be accepted on local bus routes between East Croydon, West Croydon, Waddon, Wallington, Carshalton Beeches an Sutton.

Please allow extra time for your journey and seek alternative routes if possible. Note that all services to and from London will serve London Victoria. There will be no service at London Bridge, London Blackfriars or other Thameslink London stations. Queuing systems will be in place and you may not be able to board the first bus if space is not available.

New Year’s Day

Services will operate in the early hours of the morning of Monday 1 January on the following Southern and Thameslink routes:

  • London Bridge and Sutton via Mitcham Junction
  • London St Pancras International and St Albans
  • London Bridge and Three Bridges via Gatwick Airport
  • London Victoria and East Croydon via Selhurst

For the remainder of the day a Sunday service will operate.

London Bridge: 23 December to 1 January

From Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January inclusive, there will be significant alterations to Southeastern services with many London stations not served by their trains. Full details will be available on the Southeastern website. Southern and Thameslink services to and from London Bridge and London Blackfriars will be busier. There will also be no Southern or Thameslink service to or from London Bridge from start of service until approx. 11:00 on Saturday 23 December. Tickets can be used on London Bus and Tube services as shown below.

No service at Redhill: 23 December to 1 January

From Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January inclusive, there will be no train service at Coulsdon South, Merstham, Redhill, Reigate, Earlswood, or at stations between Redhill and Tonbridge. Buses will serve these stations and journey times considerably extended. Services between London, Gatwick and the coast will continue to operate, but to a reduced frequency. Great Western Railway services will not operate between Reigate and Gatwick.

No Thameslink cross-London services: 23 December to 1 January

From Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January inclusive, there will be no Thameslink cross London service. Please use the tube and London buses to complete your journey. Full details of arrangements and alterations are available below.

Day to day summary of Thameslink service alterations (PDF)

Sutton route: 23, 24, 30 December and 1 January

On 23 and 24 December, also on 30 December to 1 January, there will be no Thameslink service via Mitcham Junction. Please use alternative Southern services to travel to and from these stations.  

On Sunday 31 December and Monday 1 January, there will be no train service between Streatham and Sutton via Wimbledon. Thameslink tickets will be accepted on local buses to get to these stations as listed below.

Information is included in the ‘Buy tickets’ functionality on this website or by visiting nationalrail.co.uk and using the journey planner. During the Thameslink cross London and Sutton route closures, it may be easier for you to use local bus or Tube services. Please use the journey planner at tfl.gov.uk to plan these journeys.

Ticket acceptance on Tube and London bus services between 23 December 2017 and 1 January 2018

The following alternative routes will be available for customers holding valid rail tickets to complete their journey.

From 2 January 2018

Customers travelling from Thameslink North stations to London who hold a London Thameslink ticket. These tickets continue to be valid for use on the Northern line between St Pancras International and London Bridge.

Additionally, as Thameslink services will not be running between London Bridge and London Blackfriars until later in the year, customers with a valid ticket travelling between London Bridge and London Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International may use the following routes:

  • Northern Line between London Bridge and St Pancras International;
  • Southeastern service to London Cannon Street then District or Circle Line to London Blackfriars. Customers can resume their journey from London Blackfrairs

Buses will no longer accept tickets.
